Vara mada completes the nosimagnitsy dike to protect the communities and local economy of toliara
05/28/2026 | 1:07 pmToliara, Madagascar, 28 May 2026 – Vara Mada announces the commissioning of the new Nosigmagnitsy dike, a major infrastructure project located in Fokontany Besakoa, within the Urban Commune of Toliara I, in the Atsimo-Andrefana region. This concrete initiative reflects the company’s commitment to sustainably improving living conditions and boosting the region’s economy.
A vital project in the face of recurring flooding
Every year, during the rainy season, the village of Nosigmagnitsy and the surrounding localities suffer severe flooding. This natural phenomenon is dangerously worsened by seawater rising up to the homes and by the difficulty of draining floodwater coming from neighboring areas.
Faced with this recurring emergency situation, the construction of this dike was initiated by Vara Mada with clear objectives: to protect homes from flooding, secure local economic activities, and reduce the vulnerability of the population.
Direct benefits for the population and the local economy
The construction of this infrastructure delivers tangible, immediate results:
- The dike protects the 1,755 residents of the Nosigmagnitsy sector
- The project also benefits the entire village, the Besakoa fokontany, as well as the surrounding fokontany of Battery Beach
- The dike protects an area of 21,192 hectares of salt-producing plots, thereby preventing excessive salinization and agricultural losses
- These salt-producing plots constitute a collective economic activity and represent a vital source of local income and subsistence for the households concerned
A technical achievement with strong local involvement
The implementation of the project placed the community and local businesses at the heart of its success, while ensuring high technical quality standards:
- The project consists of 510 linear meters of raised, concrete-reinforced dike
- The works included laying protective mats, installing wire mesh, and applying hydraulic concrete, supplied by the SANDRIH company
- The works were carried out with the support of the implementing agency Mahavelo Bevata
- The finishing of the concrete works will be carried out by the company MATEZA PRO
- The finishing works as well as the protection of the flap valve will be handled by the company ALUTECH
The dike is already fully operational: no leaks have been observed, rainwater drainage is effective, and the blocking of seawater during high tides has been a complete success.
Through this infrastructure, fully funded by Vara Mada, the company reaffirms its commitment to concretely supporting the development of southern Madagascar and the sustainable improvement of local communities’ living conditions.
This achievement is part of a broader approach already undertaken by Vara Mada in the region, particularly through community, educational, and social initiatives.
Vara Mada nevertheless points out that the sustainable, large-scale rollout of this type of initiative now requires a stable framework to allow the project to move forward, particularly regarding on-the-ground technical studies and the Investment Agreement process.
